1. Go to local post office and pick up a Change of Address kit.
Notify the following of address change:
a) Banks
b) Insurance companies
c) Friends and family
d) Magazines and newspapers - cancel local newspaper delivery
e) Credit card companies
f) Doctors, dentists and other providers - transfer drug prescriptions
g) Past employer - for W2 forms
2. Is there anything around the house that you don’t want to take with you? Get rid of it, sell, donate or hold a garage sale before moving day so it doesn’t tag along to the next house.
3. Make a list of the items you would like moved. It helps to know what large appliances you might need help moving.
4. If you have any perishable foods you should try and use them up.
5. If you plan to use a moving company, we recommend the following:
a) Start looking early so you can get written estimates from several companies.
b) Are there certain items they will or will not pack for you?
c) If you have high value items it is recommended that you get them appraised prior to the move in case of future claims.
6. If you are moving yourself, begin arranging for:
a) Moving help
b) Moving truck rental.
c) Packing Supplies : Boxes
d) Packing and masking tape
e) Markers
f) Newspapers
g) Twine
7. Start packing boxes as early as possible to minimize the moving day stress. Remember to clearly indicate:
a) Contents
b) Room the box is to be placed in
c) Which boxes are to be opened first
8. If moving to a different city make arrangements to pick up important records, such as:
a) Birth certificates
b) Legal
c) Optometrist
d) Doctor
e) Veterinarian
f) Dentist
9. School: notify both new and old school of the move
10. Request relocation package from the Chamber of Commerce in new town.
11. If you plan to switch banks in the new city:
a)Close out your bank accounts: Checking and Savings
c) Safe Deposit Box
d) Start a new bank account in your new town.
e) Transfer account from current bank?
